8.2                             AUTOLOGOUS TRANSFUSION

 

A

 

·         Autologous blood is the patients own blood pre-collected for their procedure

·         Autologous blood should be handled, transfused and monitored in exactly the same way as homologous (donor) blood

·         If the patient states his / her own blood has been taken for “Autologous Transfusion” document this in the Health Record

·         Autologus blood MUST be transfused before homologous blood

·         Prior to pre-medications, explain the checking procedure for autologous blood, ask the patient to identify him / herself: name & DOB, check unit numbers and show each unit to the patient to identify his / her own signature

·         Administer as per packed cells transfusion policy 8.1
